Case Study: Advocacy
Advocacy for Mathematics Research

A long established national organization of applied mathematicians and computational scientists grew increasingly concerned as support for their field stagnated for a number of years. The result of such restraint caused delays in the development of new mathematical tools necessary for a wide range of scientific research and discouraged many promising students from pursuing advanced degrees in the field. The organization retained Lewis-Burke to make the case to Congress and the Administration for a new infusion of federal funding for mathematics at several agencies.  Lewis-Burke worked to convince key policymakers that significant increases were needed to boost the technological and human resources in this vital discipline. As a result, funding for the National Science Foundation's mathematical sciences research program grew by more than 65 percent over 3 years and has remained a priority for key policy makers.
