Case Study: Coalition Building
Coalition Building for Inclusion of Ocean Issues in Innovation Legislation
Concerned about the exclusion of ocean and atmospheric sciences and education from the President's American Competitiveness Initiative and a related science and technology competitiveness bill developing in the Senate, Lewis-Burke, on behalf of its weather and climate clients and marine science clients, developed and successfully executed a legislative strategy to address this issue. The firm created an ad-hoc coalition of 13 other like-minded organizations to advocate for the inclusion of the oceanic and atmospheric sciences in the Senate American Innovation and Competitiveness legislation. Lewis-Burke placed its clients in a leadership role in this advocacy exercise which led to a successful outcome when a bipartisan agreement was reached to include such provisions in the bill during the mark up by the full committee.
