Enhanced Support for National Astronomy Observatories
Despite historic increases for the many research activities of the National Science Foundation, funding for certain aspects of astronomy research remained frozen for several years in a row. The consequences of this restrained funding created serious shortfalls in the operation and research infrastructure of a number of vital astronomy facilities. Lewis-Burke worked closely with a number of influential Senators to reverse the Administration’s budget squeeze in this area to increase funding by more than $13 million over a two year time span.
